Basic Priniciples of Particle Characterization Pre-Conference

For those relatively new to the field of particle characterization or in need of a refresher course on core topics addressed in the main Particle Summit conference, it is recommended that you attend the Pre-conference workshop.

This workshop will provide essential knowledge in the proper techniques and technologies for characterizing particles in the size range from nano scale to micron scale particles with emphasis on laser diffraction and dynamic/static light scattering techniques.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010 – Pre-Conference Workshop
Topic Speaker
8:30am-9:30am Particle Sizing Basics – Terms/Terminology/Moment Mean
This presentation will outline the basic philosophy of particles sizing, the equivalent sphere, basic statistical considerations such as measures of the mean and an outline of the light scattering techniques covered in this user meeting.  Sampling may be touched upon if time permits.
Alan Rawle, Ph.D. & Paul Kippax, Ph.D.
9:30am-10:30am Best Practices in Laser Diffraction
This presentation will cover the fundamental measurement issues in method development focusing on the 3 R’s.
Stephen Ward-Smith, Ph.D. & Paul Kippax, Ph.D.
10:30am-11:00am Break
11:00am-12:00pm Best Practices in Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS)
With this presentation you will learn how to take a good DLS measurement, and some of the sample preparation constraints.
Mr. Dave Dolak, & Ulf Nobbmann, Ph.D.
12:00pm-12:30pm Optical Properties Basics
This presentation will cover the determination of the optical constants required in light scattering experiments.
